Becoming a handler with International Fire Dogs is a professional commitment to fire investigation and ongoing proficiency. The IFD program is designed for full-time fire service and law enforcement personnel whose primary role includes fire investigation and regular K9 deployment. Handlers must commit to daily maintenance training, routine field deployments, and continued compliance with recognized fire investigation standards. All teams are trained by Maine Specialty Dogs and certified through the Maine State Police. All handlers must attend annual recertification. Agencies and handlers are expected to support the long-term care, operational readiness, and professional use of the K9 for a minimum of five years. This program is intended for individuals and agencies prepared to meet consistent performance, training, and deployment expectations.
